7-8 Academic Support

Academic Support sections are for students who have been identified through the IEP process as needing specific support in order to make effective educational progress. Academic support staff provide specially-designed instruction and support students to reach individualized academic goals.

 

7-8 Homework Support

Graduation Credits: N/A
Credit Type: N/A
Prerequisites: None

Homework Support provides supported time during the school day to complete course assignments and revisions. Students work in a structured classroom setting with a teacher present, and may work individually or in small groups as appropriate. Students are able to access support from the teacher in the classroom with regard to curriculum, organization, communication with curriculum teachers, and other issues.

7-8 Math Support

Prerequisites: Administrator Recommendation

Math Support is required for students in 7th and 8th grade who have either received a Needs Improvement or Warning score on their last MCAS test, have not been successful in prior math classes. and/or show that they could use additional support through a diagnostic assessment that all students take in the first weeks of school. The support classes are broken up into three areas aimed to support students success in their general math class: pre-teaching and re-teaching material, filling in skills gaps from previous math courses, and homework completion. There is no homework for this course, and students are assessed based on effort and progress.

 

7-8 Reading Workshop

Reading Workshop's primary goal is to support students to improve their grade-level reading. This is done through a combination of poetry discussion, word study, and independent and small-group reading. Student enrollment is based on teacher recommendation and reading assessments.

Study Skills

Study Skills is designed to help students learn how to manage their time and complete their school work on schedule. Students learn how the brain operates when it comes to learning new material, how to utilize a planner properly, and how to develop study skills to prepare for assessments. They also engage in self-regulation exercises designed to build emotional control and develop executive function strategies. All students in grade 9 are automatically enrolled in a section of Study Skills.
