DANCE Courses

7/8 Choreography

Students will explore the art of making dance in this course by learning and utilizing a wide range of choreographic tools and structures to create complex and meaningful dances. Dancers will work solo and in small groups to create dances inspired by different themes and dance styles, and to choreograph dances inspired by works of art, music, literature, personal narrative, and other themes. Dancers will also learn to respond to dance by giving feedback to peers.

7/8 Dance Education Lab

Do you love to dance and love kids? Learn how to teach dance in elementary schools and become a dance mentor for younger students in this course, which takes PVPA students into local elementary schools most weeks. Students will be trained in the award-winning Dance Education Laboratory (DEL) teacher-training model based in NYC, which emphasizes a creative approach to choreography by making connections to literature, social studies and science. There will be a performance at the end of the semester. Strong leadership skills are necessary, as well as an enthusiastic attitude!

7/8 Dance Technique 1

This is a fun introduction to different dance genres and styles. The course includes improvisation, modern dance, and dance making with an emphasis on learning the fundamentals of dance technique. Learn a wide range of dance vocabulary while discovering healthy ways of moving and learn how to watch dance and describe dance. Learners will gain flexibility, coordination, strength, and expressiveness. Emphasis is on learning the basics and gaining confidence as a dancer. No previous dance experience is necessary.

7/8 Dance Technique 2

This is a more intermediate level technique class for students seeking a challenging dance experience. Emphasis is on improving overall dance technique through a range of dance genres including modern/contemporary, ballet and improvisation. The class includes a technical warm up, center work, and learning combinations from both peers and the teacher. Elements of improvisation and dance making are integrated into the class. There will be a mandatory performance during the end of the semester.

7/8 Hip-Hop Dance

Dance in the tradition of B-boys and B-girls. Learn about the culture, dance steps, and music of the hip-hop tradition through freestyle dancing, specific styles and techniques plus choreography. Learn a wide range of hip-hop vocabulary and skills in a course emphasizing individual work, floor work, partner work, and group choreography.

7/8 Intro to African Dance and Drum

This class provides an introduction to West African dance, rhythms and chants. Students learn connections in African dance and music forms while connecting their own bodies, breath and sound. Students explore traditional dances from Guinea, West Africa. Drummers learn traditional rhythms, hand techniques and positions, and take part in the powerful interaction between movement and music.

78 Funkadelic Dance Company

Funkadelic Hip Hop Dance Company is a required course for members of the Funkadelic company. In this class, students will receive intensive and rigorous training in Hip Hop dance and gain an indepth understanding of the cultural and historic roots of Hip Hop by studying a wide range of styles such as Lockin’, Poppin’, Breakin’, 90’s, House, Wackin’ and New School. Students will learn diverse hip hop choreography from PVPA Faculty, students and guest artists and will enhance their performance and choreography skills by studying the creative process and participating in multiple performance opportunities throughout the year at PVPA and within the greater Pioneer Valley community. Auditions are required for enrollment into Funkadelic Hip Hop Dance Company and intermediate to advanced level Hip Hop dance experience expected. Additional mandatory rehearsals will be held after school on days to be decided.

African Dance I

This section of the combined dance and drumming class focuses on the study of West African dance, rhythms and chants. Students perfect African dance and music forms while connecting to their own bodies, breath and sound. Students increase technical proficiency and knowledge in traditional dances from Guinea, West Africa and other countries in western Africa.

This class is designed to improve alignment, strengthen muscles, and develop greater coordination and flexibility through a variety of workout models. This class will offer a fun, non-competitive workout where you will strengthen your entire body and develop a healthy self image! Work out in a non-stress learning environment!

Dancers train like athletes! Focus on heart-healthy fitness models which are fun, challenging, and intended to raise your overall fitness level. Learn the foundations of Zumba, a Latin-inspired dance workout which sets basic dance moves to Latin beats and rhythms, as well as other cardio workouts. Emphasis will be on improving one’s coordination, strength, flexibility and cardiovascular health and wellness.

Catalyst Dance Company

Catalyst is PVPA’s student dance company that showcases innovative student choreography and presents the works of guest choreographers and PVPA faculty of the highest caliber. Catalyst is dedicated to versatility; the techniques practiced and performance works presented range in styles from contemporary modern dance, improvisation, ballet, and jazz to hip hop and more. Catalyst dancers focus on the advanced training necessary to excel in a concert dance career. Dancers develop an in-depth understanding of composition as well as technical training and performance experience. Catalyst dancers create sophisticated choreography and practice industry established critique and response methods in dance to elevate work to the highest level. The company performs in PVPA formal and informal productions throughout the year, and has their own annual spring dance concert. This is a required class for all Catalyst members, in addition to rehearsals after school two days per week.

Choreography Lab

Deepen your improvisation and choreography skills as you create complex and meaningful dance in this course focused on experimenting with different structured improvisation models and choreographic devices and forms. Work solo and in small groups, and create dances inspired by different themes, dance styles, and works of major choreographers. Choreograph dances inspired by works of art, literature, personal narrative, and other themes. There will be a performance at the end of the semester.

This class provides students with strong foundational skills in dance technique in ballet and modern contemporary genres. Students will focus on deepened practice in technical skills, and improve anatomical awareness of appropriate body alignment (posture). Through practice in ballet, students will learn the fundamentals of barre and center work, learn ballet vocabulary, and practice ballet skills. In modern contemporary technique, students will practice center floor work, isolations, fall and recovery and release skills. Dancers will also practice and explore improvisation, finding confidence and enjoyment through movement. Students in the class are expected to have an interest in improving their dance technique and expanding their dance experiences.

Hip-Hop Dance

Hip Hop is an awareness that has its historical roots and unique dance movements. Throughout the course we will be learning about the history, culture and its influence on today’s Hip Hop scene.This is a fun and fast pace class for dancers who have developed a basic foundation in hip-hop movements and sequences. Throughout the semester, dancers will learn intricate and challenging hip-hop movements that infuse poppin’, lockin’ and house dance. Students will learn how to improvise freely in each style with enthusiasm and confidence and will be expected to choreograph their own hip hop dances, teach and collaborate with their peers, and perform in multiple venues.

Jazz Dance

Explore the roots, influences, and unique vocabulary of different styles of jazz dance that have developed throughout the ages. Dancers will learn the fundamentals of jazz dance styles through technique and choreography and will participate in research projects in order to study the history of jazz dance from its origins to the present. Students at this level must be competent at the intermediate level and ready to perform longer and more complex movement sequences that approach a higher level of performance ability.

Wofa African Dance II

Yoga

Yoga has its roots in ancient India and yet has evolved into a highly popular form of exercise in American culture. Enjoy a yoga class that combines basic Hatha postures with meditation, pranayama (breathing) and flowing yoga/dance movements designed to improve strength, flexibility, coordination and deepen a feeling of relaxation and serenity. Learn a wide range of yoga postures as well as techniques to calm the mind to help reduce stress and leave one feeling present and refreshed. Mats are provided.
